CHARCOAL/PASTELS

Tuesday 4th August, 2pm – 5pm, GT Room, Village Hall, Shipham BS25 1SG

Cost £30 for the afternoon.

Beginning with some fun warm-up exercises we will then embark on some interesting drawings. We will work on ordinary white cartridge paper, black paper and coloured pastel papers (if you have some) using charcoal, chalk and rubbers along with our soft coloured pastels. Our subject matter will include ‘pets (with a difference!)’ and a still life that we will build up using different techniques looking at various contemporary artists for that contemporary twist …. should be a whole lot of fun!

2. OUTDOOR SKETCHING DAY

Wednesday 5th August, 10.30am – 3.30pm, Axbridge Square and Church

Cost £40 for the day.

Always a different experience drawing and painting outdoors but very rewarding. We will take a small outdoor sketching kit with us to include pen & pencil, sketchbook and watercolours and small number of coloured pencils/inktense/pastels.

How do we tackle the historic buildings and Square? What about perspective? I’ve got some neat tricks up my sleeve for that! What do we leave in or out of our sketch? We will begin with some warm-up sketches and these will be fairly swiftly drawn. It’s amazing what you can produce when you have a time limit! You will then decide what you would like to sketch and spend more time drawing and painting your chosen viewpoint with hints and tips from me along the way.

Practicalities

There are toilets in Axbridge and car parks. You may wish to car share if you know of others going too.

We have the church, which we will draw in at some point, cafés or pubs should we need to shelter from the rain/heat.

Bring a packed lunch or use the local cafés/pubs.

Come equipped for the weather! e.g. sunhats and sun cream or waterproof jacket…

3. ANNUAL ACRYLICS DAY

Thursday 6th August, 10.30am – 3.30pm, GT Room, Village Hall, Shipham BS25 1SG

Cost £50 for the day.

Always informative, colourful and fun this is a chance for you to break out those acrylic paints, which we don’t get time to do during our regular classes.

We will start the day having a bit of fun with some interesting techniques using different household implements such as a mini painting roller, bubble wrap and tissue paper.
I have a fun colour mixing exercise for us to do that will involve you bringing in some magazines and a mini viewfinder…..
For the rest of the session feel free to either a) bring your own choice of subject that you’d like to paint with guidance from me, maybe using some of the techniques we looked at earlier. This could be a still life or vase of flowers that you would like to bring with you or a photograph that inspires you etc. OR b) paint a ‘landscape with a difference’ – it involves painting over masking tape, possibly using other mediums and cropping in to find various mini paintings …. This will be great fun and you’ll learn loads along the way.

Beginning with some fun warm-up exercises we will then embark on some interesting drawings, which will involve working in ways that you may no have worked before…… We will work on ordinary white cartridge paper, black paper and toned papers using charcoal, chalk and rubbers along with our soft coloured pastels. Expect to work on a large scale some of the time and expect the unexpected!

ANNUAL ACRYLICS DAY

Tuesday 5th August, 10.30 – 3.30, GT Room, Village Hall, Shipham BS25 1SG

Cost £50 for the day.

Always informative, colourful and fun.

We will make a colour wheel and also look at how adding white and black paints to our colours can produce tints, tones and shades. This is one of the ways in which it differs from watercolour and is an exciting way of working.
Some interesting warm-up exercises will follow – using acrylic paint with water; using it neat; layering; blocks of colour; working with a palette knife and other equipment…
For the rest of the session we will focus on a) using different techniques for painting landscapes/seascapes/mountains and b) painting pictures of birds and/or animals full of colour and movement both of which will produce some surprising results for you! (Although if you have a burning desire to paint a particular subject by all means bring reference material for that as well. We can apply the techniques learned to most subject matters!).

Wednesday 20th August, 10.30 – 3.30 Clevedon seafront and St. Andrew’s Church on the hill. (Wedmore is our back up plan).
